We are a small group just trying to find families. Many of our members are from families that homesteaded in the county. Kingsbury County has a small population, so many of our members know who is related and often times can find a distant relative. With South Dakota starting to keep records in 1905, we are trying to find sources of records before this time.

Projects of the Society and Individual Members

  1. Walking and locating all the Town, Church, family farm and orphan cemeteries and burial sites.
  2. We maintain an ongoing Obituary Index with over 5000 entries and growing. We welcome copies of any additional family ones you might have. Please make sure it has full dates of deaths month/day/year.
  3. We maintain a book of pedigree charts for our members. We welcome any charts you might want to add to our collection. Please include the family's location in the county and nationality along with a current snail mail and email address where others can contact you. By sending this you give KCGS the right to release it to other researchers.
  4. Members have helped write and index many area histories that have been written about Kingsbury County.
  5. We have members who will do research.
  6. Maintain the SDGENWEB county page.
  7. In 2005, our group applied for a grant to purchase a computer and workstation to house the information we had gathered on the 49 known Kingsbury cemeteries. Funding for the "Preserving the History of Kingsbury County" was provided by the MARY CHILTON CHAPTER of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution through the Mary Chilton DAR Foundation, Sioux Falls, SD.
  8. Our files and books are located in the archives at the Lake Preston City Hall.

Research requests should be directed to our snail mail address with a stamped return envelope. We ask for a $5 donation per name to search the cemetery and obituary indexes. Please include as much information as you have.
